The mountain lion (Puma concolor) -- also called cougar, puma, catamount, and panther -- is the largest cat native to North America. Mountain lions can be found in both the (east) Rincon Mountain District and (west) Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park . . . but the species is increasingly vulnerable as their natural range continues to shrink.  As more homes are built in the Tucson Mountains, or the Catalina foothills, these cats are increasingly exposed to contact with humans -- and face threats by trapping, electrocution on power poles, and collisions with automobiles.

With our Adopt a Mountain Lion revenues, FOSNP is able to assist Saguaro National Park in conducting critically-important wildlife research. NPS rangers, in cooperation with researchers from the University of Arizona, are able to assess the status and distribution of mountain lions within the confines of the Park, and to evaluate habitat connectivity between the Park and adjacent lands.

To help educate Tucsonans about what to do when they see one of these animals in their neighborhood, or if they should encounter these animals while hiking in the Park, we have developed public information materials in cooperation with the Arizona Game & Fish Department, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and the University of Arizona.
