The Arizona Trail extends 817 miles (southeast to northwest) across the State of Arizona, from the US/Mexico international border to the Arizona/Utah state line.  Begun in 1985 by teacher Dale Shewalter, this non-motorized primitive trail explores many distinct ecosystems the length of Arizona.

Beginning in the Coronado National Memorial southeast of Tucson, the Arizona Trail crosses the Huachuca Mountains and the Santa Rita Mountains, then follows Cienega Creek through Colossal Cave Mountain Park and enters the Rincon Mountain District of Saguaro National Park.  The Arizona Trail traverses the Rincon Mountains via short segments of many trails within the Park before exiting the Rincon Mountain Wilderness into the Coronado National Forest and heading on to the Santa Catalina Mountains.

In 2009, the Arizona Trail was designated as a National Scenic Trail and was completed in 2012 -- in celebration of Arizona's statehood centennial.  Volunteers offer more than 40,000 hours of service each year to help maintain the trail.
